Oh, the dreaded Valentine’s Day, or Single Awareness Day as some people like to call it. Valentine’s Day is a time for people to celebrate love, or rather, a day for people to complain about how alone they are.
Well, you know what I have to say about that: get over it. Society puts too much emphasis on Valentine’s Day. If you’re single, there is no reason why you can’t enjoy this day and here’s how:
Go out anyway
This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday, which means this awful holiday shouldn’t stop you from going out and having a good time. Forget about the fact that there are so many happy couples in love around you and make it just like any other Friday night. Or you can let the holiday fuel your hate-fire so you can harness that energy to have an even better time. Go out and meet people. Who knows? You could meet someone and then you won’t have to be alone anymore.
Or stay in
Invite people over so you can enjoy the holiday without leaving the comforts of your own home. Have a Valentine’s Day party or an anti-Valentine’s Day party or just a party. Who cares? As long as you’re not alone.
Have a date with friends
Gather up your single friends and take back the night! There are plenty of things to do in Bellingham and it’s even better with a good group of people. Go dancing, go bowling, go see a movie, just go out and have fun with your friends. Cosmopolitan Magazine suggests going to a restaurant and playing a game where you and your friends pick out couples and guess how long they’ll last based on body language. Way to endorse bullying, Cosmo.
Eat a lot
Let’s be real, chocolate is amazing and Valentine’s Day is all about chocolate. So eat chocolate, a lot, all of it. Just eat and don’t stop eating until you eat yourself into a food coma and fall asleep. That way you can just skip Valentine’s Day and you won’t have to deal with the constant reminder that you’re going to die alone because that’s what is going to happen if you’re alone on Valentine’s Day, right? RIGHT?! Plus, when you wake up on February 15, all the Valentine’s Day candy will be on sale, so you can do it all over again.
Have a date with yourself
“Treat Yo’ self,” as they say on Parks and Recreation. What’s better than spending the night in your partner’s arms? A night spent wrapped up in a blanket on the couch, eating ice cream and watching your favorite movie. In order to prepare yourself for a night of greatness, take a bubble bath, order your favorite food, do everything you need to do to pamper yourself into a state of relaxation and spare no expense because it’s not like you’re going to be spending it on a significant other.
However you decide to spend Valentine’s Day, enjoy yourself. Being single is not equivalent to being alone. It’s okay to be single on February 14, don’t let society’s stupid expectations get in the way of you having a good time.
