From ghost stories to discussions of pornography, the AS Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Alliance (LGBTA) is providing it all this quarter. They will be hosting a weekly night series, featuring one event every Tuesday, that is open for everyone to attend.

The goal of the weekly night series is to provide a safe place for LGBT-identified students, allies and anyone interested in the LGBT community to meet others and educate themselves on important issues, LGBTA Programs Coordinator Kooper Wynkoop said.

“It doesn’t matter how you identify,” she said. “You won’t be asked to disclose your identity here.”

The programs this quarter

October 13 – How to Be an Ally – This is a workshop addressing what it means to be an ally, ways straight allies can support the LGBT community and ways the LGBT community can support allyship.

October 20 – The Gray in the Rainbow – This is a discussion about bisexuality, pansexuality and other sexual identities that don’t fit into a binary set of labels. Stereotypes and myths will be discussed and anyone can pose questions they might have.

October 27 – Queer Ghost Stories – In a dark and oh-so-scary room, participants will pass a flashlight around and tell stories. Come prepared with an original queer ghost story or a traditional ghost story with a queer twist.

November 3 – Porn and You – This will be a discussion of pornography and, more specifically, how pornography functions in sexual relationships. This event is co-sponsored by the AS Sexual Awareness Center (SAC).

November 10 – Transfeminism – A guest facilitator will lead a discussion exploring the relationship between trans identity and feminism. This event is co-sponsored by the AS Women’s Center.

There are two more events scheduled for the end of the quarter: Hate Crimes and Gayme Night, on Nov. 17 and Dec. 1, respectively. While the topics for these events have been chosen, the content and details are still in the works. Keep an eye on the AS events calendar, the AS Review and www.as.wwu.edu for more information.
