Why are you seeking this position?

I’m seeking Vice President for Student Life really because I’ve seen a lot of problems in my last couple years at the university that affect a huge amount of students. I see those as being rental safety, I think lighting is another big one, I think lack of involvement with the community is definitely another big one.
I’d really like to support all students by starting to remedy these situations and trying to seek ways that we can really fix them. Obviously, they’re all pretty long-term things. I think also that a lot of students don’t feel very included in the AS and so I’d like to make sure that they feel heard.

What do you think is the role of the VP for Student Life?

I think the role of the VP for Student Life is definitely to represent the students in ways that show Western students’ commitment to sustainability, economic and environmental, but also their commitment to having a good life while they’re here, because I think that’s the pinnacle of Vice President for Student Life, making sure that students have healthy, safe, nice lives while they’re here so that they can focus on school and being students.

What is one issue affecting students that you would like to focus on or work on next year?

I think the big issue that I’m really interested in is renter’s rights. For the past couple of years I’ve been in the Legal Information Center and a huge majority of the students that I see are having issues with their rental and often they’re dealing with landlords that are acting in illegal ways and taking advantage of them. So something that’s really important to me is to make sure that the worst of those situations, at least the situations where students’ health or safety is at risk, which I’ve definitely seen a lot of those cases, and that’s a big priority for me, to support those students and make sure that they don’t have to deal with that because they have a right not to.

My name is Samantha Goldblatt, and I am thrilled to be running for the position of AS VP for Student Life! I am currently a sophomore in the Geology major and am very interested in sustainability, but also have developed a passion for renter’s rights and community involvement while at WWU.
If elected to be your VP for Student Life, I will work hard towards building a safer off-campus environment for students through increased lighting and attention to rental safety, and I will focus on emphasizing long-term environmental and economic sustainability while also fostering better connections between WWU students and those in the Bellingham community. More than anything, I want to work with YOU to create healthier and safer environments for students in the coming year, so make sure to cast your vote!
