A Resolution in Consideration of Initiative 1033
October 2009

The AS Board of Directors

Whereas the Associated Students of Western Washington University has long advocated for increased state funding to higher education in order to keep the costs for students low; and

Whereas the cost of instruction at Western Washington University is increasing at a rate that exceeds inflation plus population growth; and

Whereas initiative 1033 if passed would limit the Washington State Legislature’s expenditures to the previous year’s total expenditures plus inflation and population growth; and

Whereas initiative 1033 if passed would prevent the Washington State Legislature from paying for its current ratio of the cost of instruction without the approval of Washington State voters; and

Whereas the passage of initiative 1033 would force the tuition rate at Western Washington University to increase at a faster rate than the historical norm and what is affordable for students.

Therefore be it resolved that the Associated Students of Western Washington University encourages students to carefully consider initiative 1033 that will appear on the Washington State 2009 General Election ballot.
