May is Pride Month at Western and to start off the month of LGBT-focused events, the AS Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance (LGBTA) and the AS Women’s Center are hosting a kick-off concert featuring Chris Pureka.
Pureka, a queer musician, was chosen to open Pride Month events because she was well received by students when she performed at Western in the past, Elle Peters, LGBTA coordinator, said. Peters said Pureka is an amazing musician and has a strong following.
Pureka is an indie, acoustic musician. Common themes in her songs are love, loss, longing and hope.
The free concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11 in Old Main Theater.
Another event during Pride Month is the Queer Experience at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 14 in VU 565. The Queer Experience event will be similar to the Vagina Memoirs, where women tell stories about their experiences as a female-identified individuals, but instead of stories specifically about women, the stories at the Queer Experience will be related to queer identity, sexuality and coming out experiences. The event will feature ten monologues.
“I think it’s a really great space for people to learn about coming out across queer identities,” Peters said.
This will be the first time The Queer Experience will be performed at Western. It’s a good opportunity for queers and allies to learn about each other and how to support each other, especially in coming out situations, Peters said.
