The Current Events Forum has invited Aaron Straight, Creative Director for Seattle-based Tri-Film Productions, to talk about his experiences working with both local and international organizations – from BEARTREK to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation - that are committed to making a difference in our world.
The night features some of Aaron's short films produced on issues ranging from local conservation & homelessness to food security & water issues all around the world. Aaron will talk about the challenges and rewards of working with non-profits. He will also explore how early adventures and experience trained him unknowingly to gain the trust of some of the world's most admired organizations.
Along the way, he will be sharing information about lesser-known public service organizations headquartered in the Northwest as well as lesser-known projects funded by internationally recognized philanthropies.
The conversation will also touch on Aaron's own journey from creative writing major to agent for African musicians to film director – the tough times and the satisfaction that comes from carving one's own path.

ASP Films presents the Presidents Day Double Feature:

Event Image From the eccentric mind of director Oliver Stone (Platoon, Natural Born Killers, Any Given Sunday), comes a profile on one of the most infamous presidents in history. Starting in the late 1960s at Yale University, this biography of George W. Bush covers his military service, marriage to First Lady Laura Bush, and eventual election wins in 2000 and 2004. Controversial and reverent, W. is an engaging portrait on one of the most enigmatic and secretive political figures of this decade.

Like W., Ron Howard's Frost/Nixon depicts the story behind one of the most famous interviews in American history. Following his resignation and fall from political grace caused by the Watergate scandal, former President Richard M. Nixon agreed to an exclusive interview with British pop-sensation David Frost. Despite both mens' habit of cross witticisms and showmanship, what resulted was one of the most candid firsthand accounts of a dark era in American political history. Frost/Nixon features many actors from the original Broadway production.

ASP Films and Western Men Against Violence Present: "300" with an after film discussion

Loosely based more on the graphic novel by Frank Miller than actual historical accounts, "300" is a highly sensationalized story about 300 Spartan soldiers who found themselves defending against over 100,000 invading troops at the Battle of Thermopylae. Director Zak Snyder (Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead) uses his already iconic slow-motion style in full force, playing off the over the top dialogue. After the film, WMAV and ASP Films will be holding a discussion of the traditional masculine themes in the movie, as well as filmmaking in general and how those understandings are brought to the surface in "300."

Roe v. Wade Reenactment and Abortion Speakout

Do you know why abortions are legal in the United States? Did you know that a woman's right to an abortion is only secured by one decision from one case argued in front of the Supreme Court 37 years ago? Regardless of your personal position on abortion, it is important to understand the constitutional and interpretive reasoning behind the Justices' 7-2 decision in favor of Jane Roe in one of the Supreme Court's most famous cases. Come witness a lively, accurate reenactment of the Roe V. Wade court case (not in its entirety) and the decision that has dominated politics for the last several decades and promises to be a divisive issue for generations to come. There will also be intermittent abortion speakouts from various community members and a discussion to follow.
